Rachel Richter, photographed baby Beau in October 2008 on behalf of the Australian Charity of Child Photographers.
Beau has Type 1 SMA Babies diagnosed with SMA typically do not live past 12 months of age

Beau is 10.5 months old and really struggling, Beau lost his battle this morning

Rachel was/is organizing a gallery filled with “I’m praying for Beau” photos.

Here’s where you come in…. (from Rachel's blog)

Take a photo that includes the words “I’m praying for Beau”. The creativity is up to you.
Your photo to represent you or your family or your home etc. I want to get photos from all over Australia…the world.
You could have your child hold up the words on a sign. You could write the words in the sand. Your could draw them with chalk on the concrete.
You could sky-write in a plane….okay, maybe not, but you get the idea
Your photo does not have to be a work of art - it’s the thought that counts.
If you could PLEASE spare the time to take a photo, I would appreciate it greatly.

We are teaching in Classroom 6. 3 classes over 3 days..

Class 1: Creative Steps - The Process of Editing
Class 2: Photography Basics - How to Use Your Camera & Take Better Photos
Class 3:Digi Scraps 101

All 3 classes have a hands on element, for Class 1 and 3, we provide you with an individual laptop and Wacom Graphics Tablet to use during the class.

All 3 classes on all three days booked out last year, so get in early to book your place. The class content varies slightly in each class to what was shown and taught last year..

To say that we have had a few requests for updates on Sara and the bubs, would be an understatement... Above is James-hasn't he grown, isn't he adorable.. Oh, Sara is doing well - busy as usual (you can catch great tips and tricks on Photography by Sara in Scrapbooking Memories) we hope to see Sara back on board teaching in June.. But before then, keep popping back, as we have a few bits n pieces to share...

Go out and have fun, do something that makes you HAPPY.. OK, maybe it is not a secret, just something that we forget as we get older...

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been doing just that - playing.. Here are a couple of pics.. I have been having a ball getting back behind the camera, for no one but myself (OK the subjects-do get the pics-lol)

Warana Retreat

Thank you to Gypsy and all the ladies from ScrapChat that had Sara and I at their retreat last Sunday.. The ladies had endure us a little longer than normal due to the storms that hit Brisbane-we were told to sit put for a few extra hours.. Not that we minded the group dynamics was wonderful and it was great to see all the fantastic work that the everyone had completed..

Last Sunday saw Sara and I leaving for Nanango at Sunrise, it was a beautiful drive to Nanango filled with bird life that had a funny way, of showing that they wanted to live??!!

We introduce you to the Brush tool in Permission to Play..

The rule that I always had trouble remembering when working with the Brush tool was too;

"Create a new blank layer every time you stamp your brush"

Retreats, Workshops And A Few Fun Classes to Boot..

We have received a few Beautiful photos, layouts and off the page projects from the very talent Julianne, Katrina and Christine.

Julianne, is on the Dream Believe Team and also on the DT for Blossies. (Morayfield)

Katrina has attended a few of our classes at Seriously Scrapbooks (Mermaid Beach), after one of the classes (where we introduced Blend Modes and Filters as part of the Class) Katrina sent us this beautiful photo-both the before and after..

Christine attended our Digital Scrap Class at the Scrapbooking Expo in June, Christine used the print as the base for a Hybrid Canvas. ("I painted the canvas and the side dark blue sky blue and put a couple ofbumble bee wooden cut outs on the side. The letters I have out lined with Decor fin relief paint, and have added another picture top right of Jorja and her mum as the main picture is of Jorja and her Aunty Marian. I have used brads to attach the other picture. Also added is wooden bees")

This weekend sees Sara in Maleny for A Creative Place's Retreat. Sara is teaching our Photography Tips & Tricks Class, with the added bonus of indoor and outdoor play...

In October Point Shoot Play is off to Lismore, with Scrap N Craft with T and in November we are will be attending two retreats thus far. We will be holding a full day workshop for the girls at ScrapChat in Warana and at the end of November Rachel will be teaching our Photography Tips & Tricks Class for Direct Scrapbooking Warehouse in Mt Tamborine.

September also sees the introduction of our PhotoShoot & PhotoCard Classes, these classes (having a Christmas Theme) include a "Candid" Photo Shoot with one of the Point Shoot Play girls, a disc of the shoot, a class on PhotoCards and up to 12 PhotoCards/Tag prints, ready for Christmas. We are well on our way to the weekend... Last minute finishing touches are being put together....

Just a quick note, (actually Rachel pointed this out-thanks Rach) in the Expo guide, it states you need a "Expo Tool Kit", you don't all you need for Basics is a pen, Digi, a pen and your photos on a CD and for Photography a pen and if you like your camera..

We had a great weekend teaching, we were all over Brisbane and beyond from Mermaid Beach to Toowoomba and in between. Thanks to all that joined us...

Love Cameras & Photo Technology?

Check out the PMA Australia 2008 Imaging Technology Show at the Brisbane Convention Centre! I have been to the trade day today and there is a lot of exciting exhibits to look at. Get your hands on the newest and most exciting cameras and technology!

It is open to the public Saturday 2-6pm and Sunday 10.30am - 5pm.

The entries to the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography)'s annual awards (APPA) will also be on display and being judged. The photographs already displayed today are simply stunning. Be sure to check it out!

THEN, if that's not exciting enough... PMA will be packed up and the Scrapbook Expo will be moving in!! Yay!!

"Dream Believe Team" Meet Petrina McDonald

Continuing with Point Shoot Plays "Dream Believe Team", (or "day dream believer" team-as someone now calls it-LOL) we would like to introduce you to Petrina McDonald . Petrina through her Scrapping Club has arrange a retreat for next weekend as well as a fantastic Raffle, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Council, check out Petrina's blog for more info.

Petrina attended and organised our "first" weekend workshop, last November in Bundaberg. Below is three photos Petrina has "cropped" and "worked" on and then added to a traditional layout.

Saving Brushes into Your Photoshop files

Okay this has been something I've been meaning to post for awhile now, and I mentioned doing this again in this weekends classes so I have written a note to myself and while I am here explaining the justifying text issue (see post below) I thought I would quickly run through this also (yes I do tend to waffle on I know!)

So, you've downloaded some new photoshop brushes to play with and you have them all unzipped ready to go. But what do with the little icon (abr file).

The best way to store your brushes so they are easy to get to is by putting them into the actual photoshop file dedicated to brushes.

To do this you have to firstly - copy the ABR brush file.

Then through your computer you'll need to find the following folders on your computer - (mine starts off from my C drive ... then it's Program Files -> Adobe -> Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 -> Presets -> Brushes.

When you open the Brushes folder you should see a whole heap of abr icon files (these are the brushes that photoshop elements comes with) - now just paste your new brush file into the folder.

For those of you who don't have Elements 5 but another verison, the files are the same, just that you will have to look for your Adobe Photoshop "what ever" folder above.

Lastly - when you open up photoshop elements and go to select your bushes, what you will have to do is where it says "Brushes:" You'll most likely see the words Default Brushes in a little box, click on that and you will see a list of other brushes, these are all the brushes you have installed into your photoshop elements brushes folder!! So it's then just a matter of remembering what the ABR file you copied over was called, selecting that one from the list - and off you go!!

PS. Remember the rules - new empty layer for each new brush!!

Hope that all made sense (so different trying to give instructions over the computer then in the class room!) Let me know how you all go with that!!

*waves* I told you I would single you out on here :)

For all those who didn't attend my permission to play class at Stamp Antic's on Saturday... Michelle one of my very clever students asked a question that I must admit - put me on the spot! I had no idea - and even the book couldn't save me on this one!!

After a bit of poking around online I have found the answer though!!

The question was this: Can you justify text in Elements.

Short Answer: No.

Long Answer: Yes. (haha)

Okay - well you can't 'find' anywhere to justify it in elements, the tools that you would find in other word programs aren't there in elements. BUT. (this is where it gets a bit tricky) There is a way to 'fool' Elements and make it do it... After you have set up your journaling/text box, simply click back in the box so it's 'active' (ie you could type in it if you wished) - then hold down shift+ctrl+ J (J for justify) and your text box should now be justified.

I also will just mention that if you want something to stop being Justified you'll have to click on one of the other paragraph alignment options on the tool bar - or you can try out the short cuts,

shift+ctrl+L (left aligned)
shift+ctrl+E (right aligned)
shit+ctrl+C (center aligned)

Peta to the Rescue

Ohh look my first official post!! HI EVRYONE!! :)

Just thought I would stop by and give a report on how our first Photo Rescue Classes went. I had two classes this weekend, my first one was at Passion for Paper on Saturday and the Second was at Stamp Antics on Sunday. I'm happy to report in to say that both class where a lot of fun and that we had a great time!! Thanks to my wonderful students!!! :)

I must say one thing I loved about these classes is the fact that for the most part, I'm getting to see the ladies a third time, as I taught them in the basics and permission to play classes as well. Its great because not only names and faces start becoming more and more familiar, but you get to see how they are progressing and getting comfortable with the program! I'm of course looking forward to seeing them all again in the Scrappy Diva's Classes when we have those! (10 May for Passion for Paper and 19 April for Stamp Antics ... and I think they are booked out already - I'm sure we'll be having other dates coming up soon too!) Hopefully they will bring in some of their restored photos to show me (HINT, HINT LADIES!! haha)

Another fun thing that I really loved about this weekends classes was getting to see other peoples photos. It's always so interesting to see other peoples photos, and when you can help them fix or create something with them that's an amazing feeling. I also like it as it challenges me to work with certain things that I might not have in my own photos. For example Jackie in my class at Stamp Antics brought in an image that she had to do in two scans as the original was a3 in size. I got time to sit down with her and show her how to 'stich' the photos together. I certainly loved that aspect of working one on one in this class that you don't get so much in the others. But then I do love to problem solving and work things out in photoshop (as well as sharing that knowledge with people).

Now before I run off again. (got to get ready for the gold coast show - 2 sleeps and counting!)

Here is two examples of some quick things we did in class, of course if this was my photo to keep at home I would spend a lot more time being 'picky' over this. But gives you an idea of the kinds of things you can learn to do! The first image is using various techniques to restore a faded image and get rid of tears, folds and even fungus that has crept into an old photo. I'm not sure of the history behind this photo as it's actually one from Sara's collection we might have to twist her arm and get her to pop in and let us know ;) .

The second is restoring and correcting colors in an old photo and just fixing up dirt spots and such this was actually an old slide photo from the early 1970's... It's actually a photo of my brother with the family dog when my parents lived in Malaysia (before I was born) .

While I'm also here - will also say thank you to the wonderful group on had on Saturday at Scrapbook Princess for the Permission to Play class - that was also lots of fun and great to catch up with those who I meet in the beginners class! (and to meet some new faces also!)

I can't wait for the show and can't wait for my classes the following weekend!! I'm going to a new store (Scrap of Difference in Ipswich!) and Saturday I have a basics class at Passion for Paper, and Sunday a basics class at Stamp Antics... so that means three whole new groups of people to meet!!!

Also. I start full time work on the 7th!! April is going to be a busy month for me, as my sister and her family are maybe coming up for the long weekend in April, thankfully it's the one weekend I currently have free!

Okay I think I have taken over the blog long enough, see this is why I've been so quite on here... I'm not one to say just a few words .... I tend to write essays, just ask Mel! hehe.

A big shout out to the ladies who attended last night-you worked so hard...

I was Lucky enough to sit in on the class-Boy did I learn a few new tricks-You Girls Rock..

Our Fave "Manual" was a huge hit, near all the girls bought one, as their back up companion LOL

We also "pre announced" a few new bits and pieces. All to be officially announced/launched at the Gold Coast Craft Fair. We have had a few emails on how you can ensure that you get a seat in either the PhotoShop Basics 101 Workshop or The Photography Seminar being held at the Gold Coast Craft Fair..

We have made it easy peasy... To the right there is 2 ways you may do so...

1. Complete and submit the Booking Form

2. Pre book and pay using the PayPal shop just over there (nearly there-to the right-down a bit-that's it you got it-LOL)

The Point Shoot Play team has been busy working out all the best bits to show you at the Fair.

Check out The Studio at the Craft Fair website. We have two classes each day, during the Fair.

PhotoShop Basics 101 - Point Shoot Play's most popular program. Join Peta, Sara or Andrea for three hours while we guide you through getting to know your photoimaging software. Use a mouse or the fabulous Wacom Bamboo Fun graphics tablet on an individual laptop, for only $45 per person.

Photography Seminar - Sara or Andrea will run you through the basics and teach you some tips and tricks to improving your photography, for only $20 per person.

Bookings and enquiries can be made via our booking form or at the Point Shoot Play stand at the show. Places are filling fast, so don't miss out!!

I hear each participant will receive a fabulous kit bag for attending each class... even I'm keen to see what's in them!!

The Point Shoot Play girls have been super busy teaching and organising up-coming events.

Thank you to Lisa and her girls at Remember When in Gympie!! Peta and I travelled to Gympie on Sunday and spent the day teaching and having a lot of fun. Wow, Lisa knows how to feed her girls!!

Andrea joined Peta at Blossies (Morayfield) last Friday night, too. Peta taught a fantastic class and I hear most are keen to get back into learning more about manipulating their photographs more creatively.

Stay tuned for some Show information! We are currently putting together our Gold Coast Craft Fair schedule and booth. Email Mel on mel@pointshootplay.com to book your place in a Photoshop class or Photography seminar.

PHOTOSHOP CLASS - $45
Begin to learn how to manipulate photographs using Photoshop Elements 5. Most photomanipulation software is similar, so you will definitely pick up some information you can use in your software (if you don't have PSE5).

Each participant will be able to work through examples on an individual laptop as well as learn how to use a Wacom Bamboo Fun graphics tablet, throughout the class, while your Tutor explains via a projector and screen.

PHOTOGRAPHY SEMINAR - $20
Relax while our Photographer/Tutor explains the different functions on your 'Point & Shoot' or digital SLR camera and gives you tips and tricks to taking better photographs!
